By the Court:- Just after the Sergeant put his foot outside my

door someone called me to go upstairs.

Ernest Alexander Ronald Laing sworn:-

I am Assistant

Superintendent of the Civil Hospital. I attended the man Tsang Chak from the 6th August. He was suffering from rupture of the urethra and died on 7th. He died from suppression of urine following on the rupture of urethra. He must have received a blow on the urethra. It is in front of the anus. It was most probably caused by a kick. It might be caused by falling straddle wise on a hard fence. The appearances were more consistent with a kiek than any other cause. I think this arose from a blow, not a fall, from the bruised appearanee extending to either side of the buttocks. The kick must have been given with considerable force. The deceased appeared about 56 and was a fairly feeble man. I performed the postmortem and found rupture of urethra and extensive bruise from behind the anus to buttocks. The bladder walls were thickened as from disease, but the state of the bladder did not cause suppression of urine.

Crossexamined by Mr Slade:- I think it unlikely it was caused by blow or shove of a piece of bamboo. The bamboo would injure the skin unless it met the skin at right angles. I think the

toe of a boot more likely.

Shee Shing declared:- I live at Yaumati and am an eggineer. On evening of 3rd August I saw a polies sergeant in a brothel. The girl was playing with him so a number of people went up to look, so the Sergeant took up a piece of wood to throw it at the crowd and the woman took it away. The sergeant came out, the erowd dispersed, but one man remained behind and the police sergeant kicked him. I saw it. The prisoner was the
